Room to Read was founded by Microsoft executive John Wood. So far, $3,000 has been raised through a pep rally and a student/faculty basketball game at the school. More fundraisers are in the pipeline for this year and if necessary, the project will be continued next year by the current juniors at Avon High School.
"This is our biggest project," said Kiernan. "The idea was presented to us by one of our librarians last year. We decided to make it a long-term goal."
Kiernan said the school will probably be built in Nepal in an area where the residents are impoverished and school is difficult to attend. The project fits into Kiernan's personal aspirations.
"I want to do something service based for my career," she said. "I want to work for a not-for-profit and then lead a not-for-profit. Social work is something I have been interested in."
With help from about 50 student government representatives at Avon High School, Kiernan said they are now turning to the wider Avon community to consider supporting the project. "I want to see the end result," said Kiernan. "We do have a great group of juniors and I am confident that they can continue the project, if necessary."
On Dec. 13, there will be a book fair fundraiser at the Barnes & Noble in the Shoppes at Farmington Valley from 6 to 10 p.m. Teachers will provide suggested book lists and a portion of sales proceeds will be deposited in the Avon High School Room to Read account.
"We are making it a good night out with coffee, music, and games for smaller kids," said Kiernan.
